Deaf Donor Denied
In Halifax, Canada, teenager Jamie Routledge wanted to do a good deed at her school but was unexpectedly thwarted. The 12th grade student was prepared to give blood at a clinic at the J.L. Ilsley High School on Oct. 17, but a staff-person from the Canadian Blood Services event abruptly turned Jamie down because she is deaf.

Mar 26, 2009: 03:07 AMWOW!!! I can't believe that Jamie went thru this humiliation at first of not being able to donate blood just cuz she is deaf. For goodness sakes! What are they afraid of? That our "deaf" blood will make future generations become "deaf"? Or afraid they'll catch some kind of disease just cuz of deafness? I've given blood many times in the past in my state, but never went thru this....they accepted me donating my blood, didn't matter if I am deaf. But some of these countries or states need to be educated that there's nothing wrong with our blood just cuz we deaf. I hope this doesn't happen to other deaf people in the future in donating blood to help others.I'm happy that Jamie finally was able to give blood in the end....but felt sorry for her cuz of the humiliation she went thru. Good going Jamie!!! Keep fighting for your rights!!After all, it's DEAF POWER!! :)

Nov 03, 2008: 01:26 AMIt happened to me once about a decade ago when a bloodmobile stopped by and decided to donate my blood. But once they learned that I was deaf and told me that they cannot accept my blood donation because of deafness just like Jamie was told. So I was quite shocked about it yet didn't give it a crap since it didn't cost me anything and left off. Shame on 'em! At least it's good that it got their attention on Jamie's part. Few others I knew told me that it did them the same thing in the past. They need to be educated about the deafness after all yet it ain't news for us. At the time we had no Internet to share the news so nowadays it can be helpful and educational.
