Welcome to the first of our four part series on Deaf unemployment. In the United States, the unemployment rate averages between 4-6%, but in the Deaf Community the numbers are exceedingly higher.

The larger problem the deaf community has is the lack of education in the use of the written English Language. Deaf people need to be able to read and write English on at least a 12th grade level to be considered for even a low level job with most companies. You need to know proper sentence structure (syntax) and grammar, in order to be accepted into college. After reading the posts by some of the fellow deaf on this site, I am not surprised they can not find suitable work. Their grammar and syntax are so poor, their posts barely make sense. How can you write a resume that will gain any consideration from a prospective employer, with nonexistent writing skills? You simply cannot communicate with the hearing world by writing sentences the same way you would sign them in the limited vocabulary of ASL. I blame the various educational systems across the USA for their failure to give deaf students even the basic reading and writing skills they need to succeed in life. I was lucky, as I attended a school in a district that emphasized reading and writing skills. They used SEE as well as ASL. I know so many deaf people view SEE with suspicion. Some express an outright hatred for it. Such narrow mindedness on their part does nothing to help their lot either. I just had to get this off my chest. I was laid off from my job in October 2008. I am currently enrolled in an Alternative Energy (Solar) program at TSTC Waco. I hope to enter what may be a rewarding change of careers for myself. Without the good English language skills I have, I would not have been able to get into college. For many of the older deaf that have little education, or language skills, their is little to no hope of gainful employment, and SSI and SSDI will probably be their sole means of support. God help them if the US Government should stop paying SSI
